Resetting a Windows 10 computer can help fix various issues or restore it to its original state. There are two main ways to reset a Windows 10 computer: using the “Reset this PC” feature or performing a factory reset. Here’s how to do each:
Method 1: Reset this PC
Open Settings: Click on the Start menu, then click on the gear icon (⚙️) to open the Settings app.
Navigate to Update & Security: In the Settings window, click on “Update & Security.”
Choose Recovery: In the left sidebar, select “Recovery.”
Reset this PC: Under the “Reset this PC” section, click on the “Get started” button.
Choose an option:
Keep my files: This option will remove apps and settings, but keep your personal files intact.
Remove everything: This option will remove all personal files, apps, and settings.
Follow the prompts: Depending on the option you choose, you may be asked to confirm your choice and/or choose whether to clean the drive fully or quickly.
Start the reset: Once you’ve made your selections, click “Reset” to start the process. Your computer will restart and begin the reset process.
Method 2: Factory Reset
If you want to perform a more thorough reset, restoring your computer to its factory settings, you can use the built-in recovery options:
Access Recovery Environment:
If your computer can boot into Windows: Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. After restarting, go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
If your computer cannot boot into Windows: Insert a Windows 10 installation media (USB or DVD) and boot from it. When prompted, press any key to boot from the installation media. Select your language and keyboard layout, then click “Repair your computer” > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
Choose an option: Select “Remove everything” to erase all personal files, apps, and settings.
Choose a target drive: If prompted, choose whether to just remove your files or fully clean the drive. This process will take longer but ensures that your data is securely erased.
Start the reset: Follow the prompts to confirm your choice and start the reset process. Your computer will restart and begin resetting to its factory settings.
Note: Ensure that you have backed up any important files before resetting your computer, as the process will erase all personal data and installed applications.
